The Effect of Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy on Enhancement of Emotional Intelligence and Mental Health in Children with Low Emotional Intelligence

|
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cognitive-behavioral play therapy program on enhancing and promoting emotional intelligence and mental health in children with low emotional intelligence. The children with lower emotional intelligence scores(bottom 30%) who attend in elementary school located in Gyeonggi Province were participated in this study. Seven subjects were assigned to the experimental group practicing cognitive-behavioral play therapy program, and seven subjects were assigned to the control group. The program was run by the trained clinicians twice a week for five weeks. The length of each session was 60 minutes. The measurements for the effectiveness of the program were Emotional Intelligence Test and Symptom Checklist-90-Revision. The results were as follows: First, there was the statistically significant improvement of Emotional intelligence scores for the experimental group, but not the control group. Second, the mental health of the experimental group showed the statistically significant improvement but that of the control group did not. In conclusion, the study showed that the cognitive-behavioral play therapy program can be helpful to the children with lower emotional intelligence, and can be effective in improving their emotional ability and peaceful mind.
